FREEHAND MACHINE EMBROIDERY COURSES WITH ALISON
Student Course Requirements
For the majority of my courses you will require the equipment in the MACHINE EMBROIDERY and SILK PAINTING lists below
If you are on a TEAR, LAYER AND STITCH or WINTER TREES please see the appropriate lists at the bottom of this page

If you have any trouble sourcing items please note all items marked with a £ may be purchased from the tutor and all items marked with an X may be borrowed from the tutor

MACHINE EMBROIDERY Requirements

An electric sewing machine, well maintained, a basic machine that you are familiar with is ideal, you dont need a computerised model. Preferably with an extension table to support the hoop and a removable bobbin case so the bobbin tension can easily be altered. A stitch width control dial easier to control than push button controls and the feed dogs will need to be lowered
Spare bobbin case if you prefer not to alter the tension on your usual case
X Photographs for inspiration/detail appropriate to the course (see the website gallery for ideas)
X Large screwdriver for tightening embroidery hoop screw
X Small screwdriver for altering tension on machine bobbin case
£ White medium weight silk (Habutai 8mm) as background fabric for embroidery
£ Air/water-soluble pen to transfer design on to silk
£ Selection of sewing machine threads, all types can be used
£ 2 x 8 inch wooden embroidery hoop with screw on outer hoop (With inner hoop bound with cotton tape)
Embroidery scissors with sharp pointed ends
Medium weight cotton fabric or similar to practice stitch techniques
Spare bobbins for machine
Spare machine needles size 12/80 or similar
Notepad and pen, tracing paper or acetate, pencil and ruler
X 2 x L-shaped cards for framing/cropping images

SILK PAINTING Requirements

£ Clear gutta in a pipette with a medium sized metal gutta nib ( 0.5mm or 0.7mm ) to help control the flow of the resist
£ Fabric paints or dyes that are transparent and heat fixed (The use of the tutors DEKA silk paints for the course is an option for £3.00)
X Square wooden frame to stretch silk on for painting (approximately 15 x 15 ins)
X £ Silk pins (3 pronged) to secure silk to wooden frame
X Masking tape
X Hair dryer to speed up the painting process
Assorted watercolour paintbrushes (size range from 00 to 7)
Palette, with divisions, preferably white ceramic ( easier to clean)
Water pot
Face flannel or kitchen roll to dry brushes

A selection of paper e.g. tissue, crepe, hand made of various weights, patterned and plain (Colours appropriate for your project)
Muslin or lightweight calico as base fabric for paper collage
Straight pins
£ Air/water-soluble pen

WINTER TREES Requirements

X Photographs of sunsets and skies
Medium weight cotton fabric/muslin or similar to support the lace trees
Spare bobbins for machine
Embroidery scissors with sharp pointed ends
* Selection of sewing machine threads, all types can be used
2 x 8 wooden embroidery hoop with screw on outer hoop
(With inner hoop bound with cotton tape)
X Large screwdriver for tightening embroidery hoop screw
X Small screwdriver for altering tension on machine bobbin case
Spare machine needles size 12/80 or similar

For silk painting
*White medium weight silk(Habutai 8mm) as painted background fabric
*Resist or gutta in a pipette with a medium sized nib
X*Silk pins (3 pronged) to secure silk to frame
Assorted watercolour paintbrushes (size range 000 - 5)
Palette, with divisions, preferably white ceramic
Water pot
*Fabric paints or dyes
XSquare wooden frame to stretch silk on for painting
Face flannel or kitchen roll to dry brushes
